Mini-DV and DV-CAM are primarily for personal pet projects.

So you need to define what type of DV you are talking about. Instead of criticizing filmmakers for being pro horse and buggy for criticizing digital, get your facts straight.

They can't stand how digital idiots lump ALL digital into one category. Do you really believe that Digital Betacam and DV-cam are the same quality?

And Soderburgh BACKPEDALED about his love of the Canon camera after he realized how inferior it was to film.

Mini-DV is great when you don't want to be noticed, or are shooting in a confined, non-quiet area, (to drown out the DV camera noise).

Oh god. What have I started?

My post was requesting the opinions of industry pros on the merits of digital versus film, now and in the future. It's for a thesis I'm writing. I'm obviously aware there are many forms of digital, as there are many forms of film.

Please don't take it personally but I DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR VIEWS ARE. We've been through this a million times.

My knowlege is limited of course, but everyone knows two of the big guns. Lucas sees a digital future and Spielberg does not. Soderburg was at least willing to experiment in Digital. Nolan isn't interested.

I just wondered if any of you knew any other directors or cinematogrophers who've addressed this issue in favour of film, as the net is full of pro digital fanaticism, and I have more than enough on the merits of digital.

In a very recent issue of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER Lucas talks about a meeting he conducted about this subject. In attendance were Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone ( I think ) and a few other people. I think I lost that issue, but it was just a few months back. Lucas may have been on the cover.

I do remember him saying Scorsese being reluctant to abandon film. However, when planning & blocking GANGS OF NEW YORK, his DP did shoot a ton of footage with DV ( pretty much every cinematographer does). So there you go, both can co-exist and serve a purpose.

Lucas being the big DV advocate should be no surprise. He's a sci-fi nut. So it makes sense.
